Basic points when using your Van Ramp

tank_picNever exceed the Safe Working Load
Although our Van Ramps will probably carry a Tank they may struggle with two! Your Ra`alloy Van Ramp offers a standard Safe Working Load of 750 kgs (1650 lbs) and 1000 kgs (2200 lbs) depending on which type you purchase. Llyods British Load Testing Ltd tested a ramp of maximum size to destruction By a divisable calculation this Safe Working Load was assigned. We manufacture all of our ramps within the dimensions of the tested ramp.
Ra`alloy standard ramps are capable of carrying loads far greater than any other on the market. So please keep within our specified Safe Working Load, and should you have doubts, contact us

Make Sure Your Ramp Is Fixed To The Van Securely

Detail 1 shows a Hook On connection - Please always make sure that the dowels on the hooks are seated correcty and fully home in the holes in the edge of your van.
Detail 2 shows our Rest On connection. Always make sure that the Ram Bar is fully pushed against the rear of the van and whenever posible use the a strap to pull the ramp against the rear of the vehicle to be loaded. There is a fixing point below the ramp

Multi Section Ramps
Our multi section ramps have a super strong leg that folds out into position Please always ensure that the leg is fully locked back to its stops when in use.two_stage_leg_detail
This leg is precisely positioned during manufacture so that it gives the ultimate strength.
And also please do not exceed the recommended working height tolerances.

Whenever possible always set the ramp up on level ground
Although Ra`alloy Van Ramps offer a certain amount of flexibility to follow ground contours please try to set up the ramp as level as possible.

Some Manual Handling Advise

We have offered advise on the care of your ramp above and touched on a few safety features, however, one of the ultimate reasons you have purchased a Ra`alloy Ramp is to speed loading and unloading and to make you or your employees work more efficiently.
A ramp will certainly ease loading and unloading but whether you use a ramp or not you should consider a few general Manual Handling points, or we guarntee that you will either be paying someone else to do your work at least visiting your Doctor with back pain.

General Hints On Lifting

Foot Position

Plan Your Lift - Think about the weight of the object and where its final place will be and make sure that there are no obstructions on the way. Think about your foot position. Always use handling aids if possible such as Sack Trucks or Hydraulic Pallet Trucks. Ra`alloy Ramps are so robust you can run a Grand Piano on a 4 Wheeled Dollie up and down without causing damage to the ramp.

Make sure your posture is correct - Take care when lifting from floor level. Bend the knees without over-flexing and do not kneel.
Keep your Back as straight as possible while maintaining its natural curve.
Lean forward a little over the load to make sure you have a good grip. Keep your shoulders level and facing the same way as your hips .

Make sure you get a good grip - Always try to keep your arms within the boundry of your arms so that you can keep your grip secure. If you stretch your arms forward make sure that your grip is secure and your posture is correct.

Keep the load close to the body - Always keep the load close to the body and if one side is heavier than the other, that side should be the side close to the body.

Lift Smoothly - Keep the lift as smooth as possible remembering to keep the posture correct at all times.

Final Position - Place the object down at the end of the lift and then set its position.

Two or more people lifting together - Two people should not attempt to lift a load of their combined capacity. Together they should only lift 2/3 rds of the capacity.

In the case of 3 or more people, they should only attempt to lift 1/2 of their combined capacity.

Trolley's, Flight Cases & Dollies
Care should always be taken when pushing any item with wheels or Castors and its a good idea to follow some basic steps below ;
  • Always make sure the way forward is clear and avoid where possible twists and turns
  • Adopt a good comfortable position with the Body as straight as possible before pushing.
  • Ask yourself how heavy is the item ? Will you struggle getting it up or down the ramp smoothly ? if so get help. Its a good idea to follow the guides above for correct weight handling. Remember that the force needed to push an item along level ground is 2% of the total weight ,ie if the item is 500 kgs (1100lbs) the you will need to exert 10 kgs (22 lbs) of force to make it move. - This is assuming that the wheels are in good condition and well oiled.
So when you are pushing up a ramp the required force could go up as much as 20 times depending on the angle of the ramp.
  • Keep the feet well away from the rear of the item and never exceed walking speed.
We hope the above gives some idea of how to prevent injury and also gives an insight to correct handling while using a ramp. We are aware that in practicle terms it is difficult to implement the above so please at all times remember to be carefull and consider your own health and safety and the safety of others around while loading and unloading equipment
