Ramp Design ConsiderationsThings that should be considered in your ramp design See details of our 'Virtual Ramp Design' serviceLength - The length of the ramp should be to your particular national standard. In the UK the a recommeneded length should be a minimum of 1: 12 ideally 1:15 where possible, although should the guideline of Part M be considered, then the length should be 1 : 20 gradient which means that if the rise is 1 metre then the length should be 20 metres. Along the 20 metre length there should be regular flat rest areas however(at this height a maximum of every 10 metre), it is rare that space is available to assemble such a ramp so turning platforms should be included in the design. These platforms are detailed above. Width - In the UK the recommended width is 1.2 metres clear walkway, where possible. As a rule of thumb allow approximately 75 cm for the width of a Wheelchair and its a good idea to allow 2 wheelchairs to pass side by side which would make the ramp width 1.5 metres and this width ramp would be within Part M gudelines . Handrail - Minimum 40 mm diameter handrails, and centres of the horizontal tube not exceeding 450 mm and top of upstand to mid handrail not to exceed 450 mm Turning Platforms - Turning platforms can minimise space taken by the ramp and can be used at the extremities of the access ramp. Ramp turning platforms should have a minimum width the same as the ramp and a length of a minimum of 10 cm longer than the width of both ramps, to allow a good sized space between the handrail return at the centre of the ramp, thus preventing a potential hand trap. Rest Platforms - These should be positioned as often as possible and a good guide is a height at 100 cm and a ramp angle of 1:20 then the maximum spacing should be 10 metres, 1 :15 a good spacing should be 7.5 metres and 1:12 should be 5 metres . Side Upstands - These are fitted to the sides of the ramp and prevent the users from walking off and should be at least 10 cm high. Access Stair - ideally should be used at the top platform nearest the door so that quick access from the door is available.
Mesh Handrail Infills - Its a good idea to infill the handrails where children are involed as this prevents swinging on the rails and injury.
